Diets are an illusion. A game at best. Yet we continue to get drawn into believing the media myth that thinness equals success, happiness and beauty.
We've all been there. You know, that little voice that whispers in your ear, "maybe this time, this one, will work".
We've spent hours and even years trying to reshape ourselves to fit the fashion template of the day only to be less than satisfied when we look in the mirror. We rely on this reflected image to tell us who we are......
North Americans spent 32 billion dollars last year on dieting. Dieting works alright.......for the diet industry! This four letter word has influenced countless women, men, girls and boys to spend huge amounts of time, energy and money on a pilgrimage towards an illusion of beauty.
What the diet industry fails to mention, however, is that all human beings have a natural set point weight. Yep, that's right. Our body size is predetermined at conception and is primarily influenced by our genes. (not jeans!)
Our height, hair & eye color and yes, our weight, is influenced by heredity. Society attempts to invalidate biology as well as our respect for individual differences by insisting that we can be any size we want.....if we would just try hard enough. This is a "big lie".
When we attempt to alter our natural set point weight with dieting, our body fights back in an effort to maintain our set point.
For example, if I am naturally 150lbs and I decide to go on a diet and I lose a few pounds, my body immediately defends my set point of 150lbs by increasing my hunger and decreasing my metabolism. Well, that's not the plan when you're on a diet, right? However, your body doesn't know you're on a diet and doesn't care about current fashion. The body's job is to keep you healthy. Eventually, I will regain the weight and a few extra pounds for good measure....Sound familiar??
The body resets the set point weight as a defense mechanism just in case you ever decide to do such a crazy thing again....
Over the course of a lifetime, a person may diet themselves into obesity......
The answers to your food and body conflict are in your soul. I encourage you to ask yourself these questions....
The mirror is only a day to day snapshot of our outside.
Dieting has nothing to do with lasting happiness.
It's not our body that needs changing, it's our beliefs...
